Electromagnetic Flow Meter Installation Guide
Most mag-flow problems are installation problems. This guide covers grounding, full-pipe conditions, straight runs, and checks that stabilize readings.

When to Use Electromagnetic Flow Meters
- Conductive liquids (water, effluent, slurry with sufficient conductivity)
- Applications requiring low pressure drop
- ETP, water treatment, utilities, process water lines
Pre-Installation Checklist
Conductivity
- Confirm minimum conductivity as per meter spec
- Non-conductive fluids are not suitable
Pipe Condition
- Ensure meter location remains full at all times
- Avoid partially filled pipes
Electrode & Lining
- Select lining compatible with fluid
- Choose electrode material resistant to corrosion
Grounding & Earthing (Most Critical)
- Best practice:
- Mag flow meters measure voltage induced in the liquid. Poor grounding causes noise and unstable readings.
- Best practice:
- Use grounding rings or electrodes where required, especially with lined pipes or non-metallic piping.
- Connect ground terminals to plant earth
- Avoid shared earthing with high-noise equipment
- Verify continuity during commissioning
Installation Location & Straight Runs
- Provide adequate straight pipe length upstream/downstream as recommended
- Avoid installation immediately after pumps, valves, or elbows
- Install on vertical lines with upward flow where possible
- Tip: If space is limited, share a piping sketch—installation can often be optimized
Air, Bubbles & Empty Pipe Issues
- Avoid high points in piping where air can accumulate
- Ensure proper venting upstream
- Use empty pipe detection if available
Common Seal Selection Mistakes
- No proper earthing → unstable signal
- Meter installed at pipe high point → air pockets
- Incorrect liner selection → premature failure
- Ignoring straight-run guidance → noisy readings

- Fluid type and conductivity
